Speedball SB004901 16 in dual-edge scoop coater
This 16-inch aluminum trough applies light-sensitive emulsion to a screen before exposure.

What this tool is for
This 16-inch aluminum trough applies light-sensitive emulsion to a screen before exposure. The two lips give you a choice for different mesh. Speedball recommends the sharper lip for higher mesh counts and the rounded lip for lower counts. The flat base lets you set the trough down between screens. A snap-on cover helps shield it from dust.

Fit and buying advice
Check the inside width of the frames you actually coat with the end caps in place. A frame sold as 16 inches wide can have a smaller clear opening if the stated dimension includes the rails. Compare the 11-inch coater if most of your frames are compact. The 16-inch version earns its bench space when your larger screens can take its width and you want to coat more of the screen in each pass.

Questions about this tool
Can the same trough handle two mesh counts?
Yes. Speedball provides a sharp and a rounded lip on the same coater. Follow the emulsion maker’s coating instructions for the screen you are preparing.
What if I mostly use narrow screens with one occasional larger frame?
Choose the lip width you can use on the narrow frame first. A wider coater is worth a separate purchase when you regularly need its extra reach on the larger screens.
Do I need one with pre-coated stencil mesh?
A pre-coated sheet already carries the light-sensitive layer. This tool is useful when you start with plain mesh and apply liquid emulsion yourself.
