Film positives and registration tools

Inkjet film carries the artwork for exposure. Registration tools help you place artwork or align separate layers. Start with your printer’s supported media, then measure the image area it can print. The full film width includes room the printer may reserve for margins.

Choosing film positives and registration tools

Pick sheets or a roll

Cut sheets suit repeat jobs within a supported paper size. A roll makes sense if your printer accepts rolls of the stated width and core size, and you regularly vary the image length. Check the roll and printer specifications together before buying.

Plan alignment between colors

Use a consistent reference when laying out color layers. A film alignment template or square helps locate the image before exposure. At the press, choose a method to bring both screens and the workpiece into position for every color.

Department questions

Is letter film enough for artwork near the edge of a sheet?

Check the printer’s printable area with the supported media settings. Compare a larger film if your image needs the full sheet.

Should the film be crystal clear?

Follow the stencil material and film supplier guidance. Some screen-printing film is intentionally slightly milky before printing.

Does a film square fix registration on the press?

It helps place film relative to the screen. You still need repeatable screen and workpiece positioning when you print.
